A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has claimed close to 700 lives, with more bodies recovered from the rubble of collapsed buildings near Mandalay. State-run television MRTV reported that the death toll stands at 694, with another 1,670 injured and 68 missing. The situation is compounded by a prolonged civil war that complicates relief efforts and poses significant dangers.

The earthquake struck on Friday near Mandalay, with several strong aftershocks, including one of 6.4 magnitude. The tremors have flattened buildings, destroyed roads and bridges, and buckled infrastructure across the region. Myanmar's military government acknowledges that the death toll is likely to rise as they continue recovery efforts.

International aid and rescue teams are moving in to assist Myanmar in this crisis. China's Yunnan province has dispatched a team with detectors and supplies, while Russia and India have also sent rescue teams and medical aid. Myanmar's government has indicated a willingness to accept foreign assistance as they grapple with the massive humanitarian needs post-quake.
