A major earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, causing widespread damage due to the alignment of its shaking frequency with the natural vibration of buildings, according to India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Soil liquefaction further exacerbated the destruction.
Originating from the Sagaing Fault, the 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Mandalay, Myanmar, at 11:50 am IST, followed by seven aftershocks of 3.5 to 7 magnitude. The force of the quake was felt even in Northeast India, and the direction of the rupture led to severe damage in Bangkok, Thailand.
The earthquake claimed at least three lives in Bangkok and resulted in the collapse of a high-rise building. In response, Myanmar's military government declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay.
