A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Southeast Asia on Friday, leading to widespread destruction and fatalities. The seismic activity, which occurred during lunchtime, was particularly devastating in Bangkok and Myanmar's Mandalay region.
In Bangkok, a skyscraper under construction collapsed, causing panic in the streets. Meanwhile, in Myanmar's Taungoo and Aung Ban, several buildings, including a mosque and a hotel, crumbled, resulting in at least five confirmed deaths and numerous injuries. The incident prompted the ruling junta in Myanmar to declare a state of emergency across multiple regions.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake originated about 17.2 km from Mandalay, the heart of Myanmar's historic and cultural heritage. Efforts are underway to conduct rescue operations and provide humanitarian aid, as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
