A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Monywa in central Myanmar, sending mild tremors across Kolkata, Imphal, and Meghalaya's East Garo Hills on Friday.
While residents in Kolkata reported feeling the tremors, official sources confirmed there were no damages or casualties in the city. The quake's impact was also felt in Thangal Bazar, Imphal, where it caused panic among residents living in the area known for its old multi-storey buildings. Authorities reassured the public, reporting no damages thus far.
In Manipur's Ukhrul district, a separate 2.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 1:07 PM. Shortly afterward, a light-intensity tremor shook Meghalaya's East Garo Hills at 1:03 PM. Despite the disturbances, the Regional Seismological Centre and disaster management officials have verified the absence of life loss or property damage across the affected regions.
