West Bengal Innovates Cost-Free Dredging Model to Counter Siltation Threats
West Bengal has introduced a unique, cost-free dredging model developed by a state agency. This initiative involves dredging rivers and canals without state expenses, as contractors pay royalties and provide soil to the government. The model, already generating significant revenue, addresses siltation and flood issues in resource-strained conditions.

West Bengal's government has launched an innovative dredging model, bypassing traditional expenses by having contractors shoulder the costs. This strategy involves contractors paying royalties for dredged materials, which the state can reutilize.
The venture, overseen by the West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Ltd, has already piloted on five river stretches, generating Rs 112 crore in revenue. The initiative is especially critical given the state's annual allocation of Rs 500 crore for dredging, now alleviated by this model.
The Irrigation Minister emphasized the urgency due to funds from the Centre being unavailable, necessitating self-reliance to manage the flood threats from the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins. This groundbreaking approach could potentially serve as a blueprint for other regions facing similar challenges.
