The Punjab government is taking decisive action against stubble burning, a significant environmental issue, according to Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. While presenting the state budget for 2025-26, Cheema highlighted eco-friendly strategies aimed at reducing pollution and supporting farmers.

A substantial Rs 60 crore will be invested in transitioning industries to paddy stubble-based boilers. This initiative aims to utilize 3 million tonnes of paddy stubble annually, promoting renewable energy solutions and considerably reducing air pollution. Over 25 industries have already shown interest in leveraging this opportunity.

Additionally, the state has dedicated Rs 500 crore to sustainable crop residue management, encompassing the purchase of management machines, custom hiring centers, and enhanced supply chains. Efforts also include promoting awareness among farmers about efficient residue management practices. These measures are part of a broader strategy to make agriculture sustainable and profitable, while tackling air pollution concerns attributed to stubble burning.
