Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the state government will not implement a proposed 6% tax on electric vehicles (EVs) priced above Rs 30 lakh. This decision was shared in the legislative council on Wednesday, addressing concerns from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab.

During a discussion focused on EVs and air pollution, Parab articulated that the tax could undermine the central government's incentives for promoting non-polluting electric vehicles. 'The Maharashtra government's proposal would contradict our broader objective of encouraging clean mobility,' Parab argued.

Fadnavis agreed, acknowledging that the tax would not result in significant revenue and could convey a misleading commitment to electric mobility. Subsequently, the government decided not to proceed with the tax initially proposed in the 2025-26 financial year's budget.
