The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a significant $200 million loan dedicated to advancing climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure in Kolkata. The project targets the improvement of sewerage and drainage systems, intending to elevate the overall livability of the bustling Indian city.

This initiative, under the banner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sustainability, Hygiene, and Resilience Project, aims to transform living standards and health outcomes. It focuses primarily on vulnerable populations, including women and children, who suffer most from the current inadequacies in infrastructure.

Kolkata currently grapples with major urban challenges such as flooding and unhygienic conditions, which are worsened by increasingly severe rainfall due to climate change. The project plans to construct extensive sewerage pipelines, a sewage treatment plant, and five pumping stations, ultimately benefiting over 277,000 residents with improved infrastructure.
