National Conference MLA Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged illegal cutting of Chinar trees in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Veeri reacted strongly to images circulating on social media that appear to show the felling of these protected trees in Rani Bagh public park. He urged authorities to escalate the issue to the National Green Tribunal and demanded the Anantnag deputy commissioner launch a high-level probe to identify and penalize those responsible.
The felling of Chinar trees, a practice requiring stringent permissions, has sparked anger among activists and politicians, including PDP leader Iltija Mufti. She criticized the apparent contradiction in the government's conservation policies. Environment activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat condemned the misuse of pruning permissions to justify the destruction.
