Floods Halt Operations at Anglo American Platinum's Tumela Mine
Anglo American Platinum has temporarily halted operations at its Tumela mine in South Africa due to flooding from excessive rains. Although the mine is a significant part of their production, the company anticipates no major impact on its forecasted metal production goals for 2025.
Anglo American Platinum has announced a temporary cessation of activities at its Tumela mine in South Africa after intense rainfall induced flooding. Despite the disruptions, the platinum group metals giant remains confident in maintaining its production targets for 2025.
The Tumela mine, a smaller entity within Amplats' Amandelbult complex, faced the brunt of the flood damage. Operations in other parts of the complex, including the Dishaba mine, resumed on Monday after a brief suspension.
An extensive impact assessment is currently underway to guarantee safe production resumption at Tumela. The mine contributes approximately 10% to Amplats' monthly metal output. The company has downplayed any significant effects on its 2025 output projection of 3-3.4 million PGM ounces despite reporting a 40% profit drop in early 2024.
