Chidambaram, known for his significant role in the country's nuclear tests of 1974 and 1998, died at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, an official from the Department of Atomic Energy confirmed.

Throughout his distinguished career, Chidambaram led key initiatives in India's nuclear weapons programme. He notably held the positions of chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, where he influenced substantial advancements in nuclear science.

For his outstanding contributions, Chidambaram was honored with prestigious awards, receiving the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. His legacy continues to impact the scientific and nuclear community in India.
