A rare melanistic leopard, accompanied by its cub, has been sighted in the forests of Odisha's Nayagarh district, much to the delight of wildlife aficionados, an official confirmed on Friday.
The majestic creature was caught on camera, thanks to a strategically placed camera trap in the forest, capturing a glimpse of this elusive 'black panther.'
According to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha, this sighting highlights the remarkable biodiversity of central Odisha. "These elusive black panthers are crucial for the ecosystem - protecting their habitat ensures a thriving wildlife heritage," Jha stated in a post on platform X, which included a video and photo of the leopard. Recent findings from the All Odisha Leopard Estimation-2024 indicate the presence of these rare leopards in three forest divisions in the state.
