In Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, mounting tensions over the planned disposal of hazardous Union Carbide waste have sparked protests. The material from the 1984 Bhopal disaster has been relocated to the town, raising environmental and health concerns.
Two protestors attempted self-immolation during a demonstration organized by 'Pithampur Bachao Samiti' but were swiftly rescued by fellow attendees. Sandeep Raghuvanshi, a leading protestor, continues his hunger strike as authorities attempt to maintain order.
Officials, including the Dhar Superintendent of Police, assure the public of their safety, yet the situation remains fraught as demonstrators demand more transparency and assurances regarding waste incineration.
