The Gujarat cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has approved the transformation of nine municipalities into municipal corporations, increasing the state's civic bodies count to 17. This decision, coming after a 14-year hiatus since the formation of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation in 2010, marks a significant advancement in Gujarat's urban planning initiatives.
Health Minister and state government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel emphasized that the initiative will enhance urban planning and fund allocation for the development of infrastructure and amenities in these areas. The new municipal corporations will be regulated under the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949.
Administrators will be appointed ahead of the civic body elections to facilitate ward formation and delimitation. The ultimate goal is to provide swift and efficient governance to residents, who have shown positive reception towards the government's decision to expand urban management infrastructure.
