The frigid grip of winter has tightened across Kashmir, with weather forecasts signaling further snowfalls in the coming week. The Met department has projected light to moderate snow spells as the region endures its harshest winter period, known as Chillai-Kalan. This phase, which began on December 21, drastically cools the valley.

Tourist hotspot Gulmarg recorded a chilling minus 11.5 degrees Celsius, deepening by one and a half degrees from the previous night. Pahalgam's base camp experienced a slight temperature rise yet remained cold at minus 8.4 degrees. In contrast, Kupwara's temperature nominally breached above freezing.

Anticipations are set for January 1 through 6 as weak and then stronger western disturbances approach, likely leading to broader snow coverage and potential heavy snowfalls in elevated areas. With Chillai-Kalan's deep freeze poised to linger past its January 30 end, followed by Chillai-Khurd and Chillai-Bachha, a prolonged cold spell is expected.
