Barcelona Heats Up: Farewell to Gas-Powered Patio Warmers

Barcelona will ban gas-powered patio heaters from January 1, 2025, as a measure to reduce carbon emissions. The decision follows a lengthy debate between city officials and restaurant owners. Electric heaters under 150W/m2 remain allowed in winter. Similar bans exist in France; Madrid faced legal challenges.

Barcelona Heats Up: Farewell to Gas-Powered Patio Warmers

Barcelona's historic centre is witnessing the final days of gas-powered patio heaters as the city prepares to enforce a ban starting January 1, 2025. This measure comes after prolonged disputes between the city council and local restaurateurs worried about losing winter customers.

The decision, initiated in 2018, allows only electric heaters with less than 150W/m2 to operate between November 1 and April 30. This regulation mirrors actions in France, where energy-conscious groups highlight the significant CO2 emissions of heated outdoor spaces.

Interestingly, a similar initiative in Madrid was halted last year after a court ruled against the city due to insufficient evidence of heaters' impact on global warming. Barcelona, however, continues with its environmental commitment.
