New Zealand has stepped forward to assist Vanuatu in the wake of a devastating earthquake that struck the Pacific nation, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced.

“Vanuatu is a member of our Pacific family, and we are committed to supporting it during this time of acute need,” Mr. Peters said.

A New Zealand military surveillance aircraft was deployed early this morning to assess the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake. The surveillance will provide critical information for relief planning and immediate emergency response.

Additionally, New Zealand has offered to send an urban search and rescue team along with relief supplies. Deployment is expected to begin later today once Port Vila’s airport resumes operations. Emergency medical, civil defence, consular, and humanitarian personnel are also prepared to join the operation.

Collaboration with Regional Partners

New Zealand is coordinating closely with Australia and France to ensure a swift and effective response. This trilateral cooperation highlights the shared commitment to supporting Pacific nations during natural disasters.

“With communications still severely impacted by the earthquake, it will take time to understand the full extent of the needs on the ground. We stand ready to provide further assistance as requested by Vanuatu,” Mr. Peters said.

Support for New Zealanders in Vanuatu

New Zealanders currently in Vanuatu who require consular assistance are encouraged to contact the 24/7 emergency consular hotline at +64 99 20 20 20.

“We are also assessing how best to assist New Zealanders in Vanuatu and urge them to follow the guidance provided by local authorities,” Mr. Peters added.

Strengthening Pacific Solidarity

The earthquake has left a significant portion of Vanuatu’s infrastructure damaged, with widespread disruption to communications and transportation. New Zealand’s response underscores its enduring commitment to its Pacific neighbors, pledging to stand by Vanuatu as it navigates the immediate aftermath of this disaster and plans for recovery.

A Broader Call for Support

The New Zealand Government has also appealed to international agencies and donors to support relief efforts in Vanuatu. Discussions with non-governmental organizations are ongoing to ensure that aid delivery is efficient and well-coordinated.

This response reaffirms New Zealand’s role as a leader in the Pacific region, offering not only immediate aid but also long-term recovery support to its neighbors in times of crisis.
