At the COP29 summit, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced an ambitious climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035. The target aligns with climate advisers' recommendations. Starmer assured the new goal wouldn't burden the public or dictate lifestyle changes.
Baku, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Keir Starmer strengthened Britain's climate commitments at the United Nations COP29 summit, declaring a new target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by the year 2035. This ambitious benchmark aligns with recent recommendations from climate advisers.
In his statement at the climate gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan, Starmer emphasized the UK's ongoing role as a climate leader, highlighting the commitment to reach at least 81% reduction in emissions from 1990 levels. However, he noted that the goal excludes emissions from international aviation and shipping.
Starmer reassured the public, asserting that this enhanced target would not impose restrictions on their daily lives. "We're not going to start dictating to people what they do," he stated, signifying a balanced approach to ambitious environmental policy.
