In a significant move to protect endangered Olive Ridley turtles, the Odisha government announced a seven-month prohibition on fishing activities near the river mouths of Dhamara, Devi, and Rusikulya. This measure aims to ensure the safety of turtles during their breeding and mating season, preserving their marine environment.

The restriction, implemented under the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act and the Wildlife Protection Act, will be strictly enforced with multi-layered patrolling conducted by forest, fisheries, and marine police officials. Patrol efforts will include on-shore and off-shore camps, supported by high-speed boats and trawlers to apprehend violators.

To address the impact on local fishing communities, the state government will provide livelihood assistance to affected families. The initiative underscores Odisha's commitment to conserving its wildlife while balancing the needs of local communities dependent on the marine ecosystem.
