Authorities in Odisha's eastern state have ordered school closures and evacuations in anticipation of Cyclone Dana, which is set to make landfall later this week. The popular tourist city of Puri is particularly under threat.

According to the weather office, Cyclone Dana is currently over the Bay of Bengal and is predicted to turn into a severe cyclonic storm. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 120 kph on Thursday night. Consequently, schools across 14 districts are to be shut from Wednesday through Friday, and fishermen are warned against venturing out to sea.

Officials instructed tourists and pilgrims, especially those frequenting Puri and its renowned Jagannath temple, to evacuate. Rescue teams are on alert as heavy rains threaten to cause destruction to homes, roads, and power lines through flooding and landslides. Odisha's disaster readiness has improved over the years, helping to reduce potential devastation.
