Wildlife Danger on the Tracks: Train Tragedies in Madhya Pradesh
An RTI query reveals that at least 22 wild animals have been killed by trains on the West Central Railway in Madhya Pradesh since 2015, primarily due to high train speeds and the lack of wildlife underpasses. Efforts are underway to address the issue through measures like speed limits and the construction of animal passes.

In Madhya Pradesh, an alarming number of wild animals have been struck by trains on the West Central Railway since 2015, according to an RTI query. The casualties, which include leopards, tigers, cubs, and a bear, highlight the critical need for effective solutions.
The deaths have been attributed to high train speeds and insufficient underpasses, particularly on tracks running through the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary. A meeting between environmental and railway authorities last month underscored the need for compliance with wildlife protection guidelines.
Measures proposed include reducing train speeds to 60 km per hour and improving visibility along tracks. While the West Central Railway has strengthened existing underpasses, the construction of new overpasses is set to finish by June 2025.
