The State of the Climate in Kenya 2023 report provides a comprehensive analysis of Kenya’s evolving climate conditions and emphasizes the country’s increasing vulnerability to global climate change. The report highlights the alarming effects of above-normal temperatures, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events that are reshaping the country’s landscape and economy.

Kenya saw above-normal temperatures across most regions in 2023, continuing a worrying long-term warming trend. These rising temperatures are affecting both the environment and key sectors such as agriculture, water resources, and energy. The report also underscores the accelerating sea level rise along Kenya’s coastlines, occurring at a pace faster than historical averages, putting coastal communities at greater risk of flooding, erosion, and displacement.

The report reveals significant rainfall variability throughout 2023. While coastal, western, and central highlands experienced higher-than-average rainfall, other areas faced prolonged dry spells. The uneven distribution of rainfall led to severe flooding in river basins such as the Tana and Lake Victoria, which displaced thousands, caused property damage, and resulted in tragic loss of life. Simultaneously, prolonged droughts affected regions heavily reliant on agriculture, worsening food insecurity and impacting livelihoods.

Kenya also experienced a series of extreme weather events, including both droughts and floods, which strained the country’s infrastructure and disrupted energy production, particularly in areas dependent on hydropower. These climate shocks exacerbated existing socio-economic challenges, including food and energy insecurity, leaving vulnerable communities facing harsher living conditions.

The 2023 climate report calls for urgent action to mitigate these growing risks and strengthen resilience against future climate shocks. It stresses the importance of adapting to changing climate patterns and investing in sustainable practices to safeguard the environment, protect vulnerable populations, and ensure long-term economic stability.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) praised the Kenya Meteorological Department for its dedicated efforts in compiling the report, which enhances understanding of regional climate trends. WMO encourages other countries to take similar steps to improve decision-making and climate resilience on a regional scale.

As Kenya grapples with increasingly severe climate impacts, the State of the Climate in Kenya 2023 report serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for global and local efforts to combat climate change and protect communities from its most devastating effects.
