The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has launched an inquiry into allegations of unlawful tree felling at the civil surgeon's office in Jalandhar, Punjab. A panel will verify these claims and evaluate the state's procedures for tree felling in non-forest areas.

The investigation follows concerns raised over the cutting of 20 heritage trees, aged between 100 to 150 years, by the state's public works department. The trees are claimed to have been crucial for Jalandhar's ecological health.

A joint committee, including representatives from environmental bodies and the district magistrate, will visit the site. They have eight weeks to deliver a report regarding any illegal activities and current preventive measures in Punjab.
