A nighttime inferno has claimed two lives in Moscow's notable Dom Korabl, emergency officials reported on Thursday. The fire erupted in the well-known Brutalist apartment block, home to about 1,000 units, situated in the south-central Moscow area.
Initial investigations by emergency teams point to electrical malfunction in one of the apartments as the likely cause of the blaze. The building is known for its formidable gray facade that stretches 400 metres along a main street.
Completed in 1986, the Dom Korabl was an ambitious project by the Soviet Ministry of Medium Machine Building, which formerly specialized in nuclear power plants and warheads.
