In Chiang Mai province, Thailand's authorities and conservationists are engaged in an urgent mission to rescue elephants, pigs, and buffaloes caught in flash floods. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed on Friday that 117 elephants have been saved, with rescue efforts ongoing for nine others in need.

A conservationist named Saengduan Chailert reported that a village, initially a safe haven for pigs and buffaloes, is now completely inundated. "We don't know how many elephants will survive," she admitted, as efforts were made to return to the affected area for further assistance. Saengduan captured footage of a distressed herd of elephants attempting to navigate through rising waters.

Notably, one elephant struggling due to blindness captured Saengduan's attention. As Thailand's national animal, elephants have transitioned from traditional work animals to endangered species often showcased at tourist attractions. The rescue operations underscore the urgent challenges posed by flooding, claiming 49 lives and displacing numerous households in the northern region since August.
