The Supreme Court is poised to review the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)'s report on measures to mitigate air pollution in Delhi-NCR, particularly from stubble burning.
Justices Abhay S Oka, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Augustine George Masih are hearing several pleas focused on reducing the region's air pollution. On September 27, the Supreme Court criticized CAQM for its ineffectiveness, urging it to adopt a more proactive stance.
The court emphasized the need for immediate action at the grassroots level, particularly the utilization of Central government-provided equipment to prevent stubble burning. CAQM Chairman Rajesh Verma informed the court about meetings with Punjab and Haryana officials. The court has mandated vacant positions in regional pollution control boards to be filled urgently to ensure effective functioning.
