Deadly Typhoon Krathon Batters Taiwan, Causes Evacuations and Closures

Typhoon Krathon has claimed one life and injured at least 70 people in Taiwan as it brings strong winds and torrential rainfall to the island. Authorities evacuated thousands from low-lying and mountainous areas, preparing for the worst as the storm approached.
The Central Weather Administration reported that Typhoon Krathon would make landfall early Thursday on Taiwan's densely populated west coast. The typhoon's maximum sustained winds reached 173 kph, with gusts of up to 209 kph, leading officials to shut schools and cancel all domestic flights.
Kaohsiung, a city expected to bear the brunt of the storm, saw more than 2,500 residents evacuated from landslide-prone areas. The city's international airport was deserted, and most stores and restaurants remained closed. Nearly 40,000 troops stand ready to assist with rescue efforts.
