Taiwan is taking preemptive measures as Typhoon Krathon approaches, prompting the closure of schools and offices and the evacuation of hundreds from vulnerable regions. Troops have been mobilized to aid in rescue efforts, and flights have been canceled. Officials project the typhoon to impact the island's densely populated western coast, particularly the major port city of Kaohsiung.
Krathon, exhibiting maximum sustained winds of 198 kph and gusts up to 245 kph, is expected to move northeast toward the East China Sea after hitting Kaohsiung. Officials have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid flood-prone areas. The storm could bring up to 80 centimeters of rain to some regions.
In preparation, Taiwan's coast guard rescued 19 sailors from a cargo ship, and shelves were emptied as residents stocked up on essentials. The northern Philippines experienced landslides, flooding, property damage, and one fatality due to the typhoon.
