The 2024 southwest monsoon season officially concluded on Monday with India recording 934.8 mm of rainfall. This marks the highest rainfall since 2020 and represents 108 per cent of the long-period average, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Central India experienced 19 per cent more rainfall than the long-period average, while the southern peninsula saw a 14 per cent increase. Northwest India recorded a 7 per cent uptick in rainfall. However, East and northeast India registered a 14 per cent deficit.
The monsoon season plays a crucial role in India's agricultural sector, impacting 52 per cent of the net cultivated area. It is also essential for replenishing reservoirs vital for drinking water and power generation.
