The Southeastern U.S. started a significant cleanup and recovery mission on Sunday, after Hurricane Helene unleashed winds, rain, and storm surges that devastated infrastructure, caused catastrophic flooding, and left at least 60 dead from Florida to Virginia. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are discovered.
Estimated damages range from $15 billion to over $100 billion, according to insurers and forecasters. The full extent will become clearer as assessments progress. Helene struck Florida's Gulf Coast on Thursday, leading to over 3 million power outages and perilous conditions extending inland. Some of the harshest rains hit western North Carolina, causing severe flooding and multiple road closures.
In South Carolina, where 24 fatalities were recorded, many deaths were due to falling trees. Other states also reported significant losses: Georgia's Governor noted 17 deaths, and Florida's Governor accounted for 11. President Joe Biden described the devastation as overwhelming, extending prayers for those affected.
