The death toll from rain-triggered floodings and landslides across Nepal has reached 112, police confirmed on Sunday.

Eastern and central Nepal have been heavily inundated since Friday, with flash floods causing widespread destruction. The Armed Police Force reported that 64 people remain missing, and 45 have been injured in the calamity. The Kathmandu Valley suffered the highest number of fatalities, with 48 deaths recorded.

In addition to the loss of life, at least 195 houses and eight bridges have been damaged. Rescue operations have successfully saved nearly 3,100 people. Eyewitnesses noted the unprecedented scale of the disaster, which has been described as the worst flood and inundation in Kathmandu in the last 40-45 years. The overall death toll, including other districts such as Dhading and Bhaktapur, stands at 112 as per the Armed Police Force's latest statement.

The calamity also claimed the lives of six football players at a training center in Makwanpur and numerous other tragedies have occurred nationwide. Despite forecasts predicting rain until Tuesday, signs of slight relief emerged on Sunday. Arun Bhakta Shrestha, a climate and environmental expert at ICIMOD, remarked on the exceptional scale of flooding. This extreme weather event has been attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal and unusual positioning of the monsoon trough, exacerbated by unplanned urban construction. The extensive flooding and landslides have severely disrupted life, displacing hundreds of families and stranding thousands of travelers due to road disruptions.
