Rescue efforts resumed Sunday for 48 migrants missing after their boat capsized near El Hierro, Spain. Nine have been confirmed dead. The boat, carrying 84 migrants, sank early Saturday. Rescuers saved 27. The incident could be the deadliest in 30 years of migrant crossings to the Canary Islands.
Rescue crews on Sunday renewed the search for about 48 migrants missing since their boat capsized near the Spanish island of El Hierro, potentially making it the deadliest incident in three decades of crossings from Africa to the Canary Islands.
Nine people, including a child, have been confirmed dead after the boat sank early Saturday morning, according to emergency and rescue services. Rescuers were able to save 27 out of the 84 migrants attempting to reach the Spanish coast.
A Reuters journalist reported that one coastguard vessel departed from El Hierro on Sunday to continue the search, with more rescue craft and air support expected to join. Spanish authorities identified the migrants as hailing from Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal.
