The forest department in Uttar Pradesh's Budaun district has heightened vigilance following reports of animal footprints suspected to be those of leopards or wolves in several villages.
Forest officials confirmed that the footprints belong to a canine species, not a leopard. 'The tracks could be from a dog, jackal, or another canine species. There's no evidence of leopards in the area,' Forest Ranger Akanksha Gupta stated.
Locals in Budaun initially believed the prints signified the presence of leopards or wolves, especially with recent sightings in Bahraich district. The forest department received calls from Nurpur village residents, leading a team to inspect the area and collect samples.
Ranger Gupta emphasized that while villagers should remain vigilant, there is no immediate danger from leopards or wolves. Divisional Forest Officer Pradeep Verma also confirmed the footprint origins as canine, likely jackals.
Four people, including three children, were injured in recent animal attacks within the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Bahraich forest division. The forest department has intensified surveillance and advised locals to avoid venturing out alone and report any wild animal sightings immediately.
