The Supreme Court on Friday rebuked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) for its ineffective handling of air pollution in Delhi, especially due to stubble burning in neighboring states. The court stated that CAQM needs to be more proactive in its efforts to tackle the pollution crisis.
A bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih pointed out the lack of compliance with the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Act, 2021. They criticized the CAQM for not issuing sufficient directions to stakeholders.
Highlighting the pressing need for grassroots implementation of stubble-burning alternative equipment, the court urged the CAQM to ensure these tools, supplied by the Central government, are utilized effectively. The commission was directed to submit a more comprehensive compliance report by October 3.
