Kangra, Una, Bhunter, and Sundernagar towns in Himachal Pradesh have recorded their highest maximum temperatures for September this year since 1994, the local meteorological office reported on Wednesday.

In popular tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala, maximum temperatures also shattered a 10-year record. The state capital Shimla logged a maximum of 28.4°C on September 24. Bhunter hit 35.5°C, Kangra 35°C, Una 38.6°C, and Sundernagar 35.1°C, all on different dates within the month.

The past three days have been exceptionally dry, according to MeT office Director Kuldeep. However, temperatures are likely to drop by up to three degrees due to increased rainfall expected in the next two to three days, for which a 'yellow' alert for thunderstorms and lightning was issued.

The current monsoon has brought 21% less rain than usual, showing a significant shortfall. With just 573.8 mm of rainfall against a normal of 727.4 mm, this has led to road closures and power supply disruptions. The state reported significant losses totaling Rs 1,332 crore and tragic rain-related fatalities.
