MMRDA's Ambitious Plans: Backbay Revamp and Highways to Transform Mumbai

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has presented a revised draft development plan for the Backbay Reclamation Scheme. The updated proposal focuses on slum rehabilitation, metro projects, and natural features like beaches and mangroves. Notably, a marina for tourism that includes small boats and yachts is also planned.
The announcement was made during MMRDA's 158th meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The new draft divides the Backbay area into residential and commercial zones, prioritizing ecological and infrastructural balance. Expansion plans for the new legislative building and the introduction of link roads were also discussed.
In a notable decision, administrative approval was granted for an access-controlled highway connecting various cities to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The project, valued at Rs 10,833 crore, aims to cut travel times significantly while providing direct connectivity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Additional approvals include a commercial plot for NPCI's new administrative office and a budgetary allocation for the region's economic master plan.
