Iran announced Tuesday that the remaining workers trapped by a coal mine explosion in the country's east have likely perished, raising the death toll to at least 49 in one of its deadliest industrial disasters. Mohammad Ali Akhoundi, a provincial emergency official, released the grim figures via Iranian state television, reporting from the devastated mine in Tabas.

The number of miners inside the mine during the explosion has varied since a methane gas leak ignited the blast on Saturday at the Tabas coal mine, located 540 kilometers southeast of Tehran. Around 70 people were believed to be working at the site at the time of the explosion.

This tragic event is a reminder of previous disasters in Iran's mining industry. In 2017, a Northern Golestan province coal mine explosion killed at least 42 people, causing public outrage. Similar incidents in 2013 and 2009 resulted in the deaths of 11 and 20 workers, respectively, often attributed to lax safety standards and inadequate emergency services.
