Tragic Snakebite Death Sparks Controversial Reaction in Chhattisgarh Village

A 22-year-old man, Digeshwar Rathiya, succumbed to a venomous snakebite in Korba district, Chhattisgarh, leading locals to burn the reptile alive on his funeral pyre out of fear it might pose further harm.
The incident unfolded on Sunday when a common krait attacked Rathiya at his home in Baigamar village. He was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead the next morning.
Following the tragic event, villagers caught the snake and, after accompanying it to the crematorium, tied it and set it ablaze on the pyre. District officials stressed the importance of educating people about snakes and effective snakebite management.
