The Role of Nationally Determined Contributions in Combating Climate Change

In the global effort to combat climate change, countries regularly submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline their strategies to curb carbon emissions. These reports, traditionally updated every five years, provide a framework for nations to coordinate their climate policies. However, the 2021 COP26 summit called for more frequent updates.

A recent report from Net-Zero Tracker highlights that 93% of global GDP is covered by NDC targets, suggesting significant progress. Nevertheless, the need for concrete action plans remains urgent. The next round of NDC updates is scheduled for February 2025, with potential announcements during the U.N. General Assembly and the upcoming COP29 summit.

Originating from the 2015 Paris Agreement, the NDCs aim to limit global warming to within 2 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial levels. Despite the Paris Agreement, global emissions continue to rise, underscoring the critical role of ambitious NDCs. Moving forward, countries are encouraged to set more aggressive targets for 2030 and 2035 to meet climate goals.
