Madhya Pradesh has seen an extraordinary spike in rainfall, amounting to 15% more than its usual annual monsoon average, reported meteorological department officials on Sunday.
For the first time in 18 years, every district except Rewa recorded higher than average rainfall. The state usually records 949.5 mm but has received 1063.3 mm from June 1 to September 22.
According to VS Yadav, meteorologist at India's Meteorological Department's Bhopal centre, more rains are expected in the southeast region due to an upcoming rain-bearing system over the Bay of Bengal. Rewa district saw a 25% deficit in rainfall, while Sheopur experienced a 101% surplus.
Western and eastern Madhya Pradesh recorded 18% and 12% surplus rain, respectively. This year's monsoon, which arrived three days late on July 21, followed an early onset over Kerala on May 30.
