A methane leak sparked a devastating explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran, leading to the tragic loss of at least 19 lives and injuring 17 others, according to Iranian state television.

The explosion occurred at a coal mine in Tabas, approximately 540 kilometers southeast of Tehran. The blast happened late Saturday while around 70 miners were working.

Emergency personnel are being dispatched to the site. Iran, an oil-rich nation, also boasts significant mineral reserves. The country consumes 3.5 million tons of coal annually but only mines about 1.8 million tons domestically, importing the rest for its steel mills. Following repeated mining disasters, there is increased scrutiny on safety measures.
