Environment Minister Penny Simmonds has announced significant changes to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) board, with four new members appointed and one reappointment confirmed. The new appointees, Barry O’Neil, Jennifer Scoular, Alison Stewart, and Nancy Tuaine, will serve a three-year term, ending in August 2027.
“I am pleased to welcome the new board members to the EPA. They bring valuable expertise from the horticultural and agricultural science sectors, along with strong governance experience,” said Minister Simmonds.
Paul Connell, who has been a board member since 2021, has been reappointed and will serve as acting interim chair following the conclusion of Colin Dawson’s term as chair.
“I want to extend my gratitude to Paul for his continued commitment to the EPA board. His industry knowledge and commercial insight are essential to the board's operations,” Simmonds added.
The EPA, New Zealand’s national environmental regulator, plays a crucial role in sectors like agriculture and horticulture while ensuring positive environmental outcomes. Its decisions impact the lives of all New Zealanders, from overseeing the Emissions Trading Scheme to ensuring chemical safety in various industries.
Minister Simmonds also thanked outgoing board members, including former chairman Colin Dawson, as well as Tīpene Wilson, Andrea Byrom, and Heather Simpson, with a special acknowledgment of Wilson's 20 years of service.
Simmonds intends to make one further appointment later this month. "I look forward to working closely with the new board as they begin their terms," she said.
