Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Mayor Gary van Niekerk has underscored the urgent need to deepen understanding of climate change to address its impacts, including frequent floods and droughts that threaten agriculture and livelihoods in South Africa.

At the 61st Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA) Conference held at the Boardwalk Convention Centre in Gqeberha, Van Niekerk emphasized that climate change is an immediate challenge rather than a distant concern. He stressed the importance of advancing agricultural practices to mitigate these environmental challenges.

"Climate change is no longer a distant threat but a stark reality that we face, with daily struggles such as floods and droughts threatening millions and impacting agriculture," Van Niekerk said. "We must enhance our understanding of climate change in agriculture to build a resilient and prosperous future for South Africa."

The conference, which took place from Monday to Wednesday, was centered on the theme "Agricultural Economics Research for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Southern Africa." It aimed to promote training, research, and advancements in agricultural economics, with a focus on addressing climate change impacts in the region.

The event featured cutting-edge research on climate change mitigation and adaptation, along with discussions on critical issues for agricultural economists, farmers, and policymakers. Van Niekerk highlighted that hosting the AEASA conference aligns with the Eastern Cape metro’s goals of promoting sustainable economic development and showcasing its business tourism infrastructure.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Rosemary Nokuzola Capa, Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe, NMBM Deputy Mayor Babalwa Lobishe, and Council Speaker Eugene Johnson were present on the final day of the conference.
