The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit 'Mission Mausam,' a Rs 2,000 crore initiative aimed at bolstering India's capacity to predict and react to extreme weather events and the repercussions of climate change.

This ambitious mission will be spearheaded by key institutions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), including the India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting. Additional support will come from other MoES bodies such as the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, and the National Institute of Ocean Technology.

Critical components of the mission encompass deploying next-gen radars, satellite systems with advanced sensors, high-performance supercomputers, enhanced Earth system models, and a GIS-based automated decision support system for real-time data sharing. This initiative is expected to benefit many sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, defense, and tourism, by improving decision-making in urban planning, transportation, and environmental monitoring.
