Libyan Survivor Rebuilds Life Amidst Political Turmoil
A devastating flood in Derna, Libya left Hassan Kassar homeless and grieving the loss of his four children. Reconstruction stalled due to political divisions, but Kassar's home was eventually rebuilt. The tragedy underscored Libya's political instability and inadequate infrastructure maintenance.
A year ago, a catastrophic flood swept through the Libyan town of Derna, killing Hassan Kassar's four children and rendering him homeless in a city struggling with the aftermath.
Reconstruction efforts have been hindered by the deep political rifts dividing Libya, delaying recovery and leaving parts of the city in ruins.
The deluge, caused by torrential rainfall overwhelming obsolete dams, resulted in over 5,000 deaths with many still unaccounted for. Despite ongoing political instability, Kassar's home was eventually rebuilt, providing a measure of comfort amidst continuing national challenges.
