The Odisha government is set to establish pet crematoriums in major cities such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, according to Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra. The proposal was discussed during an Assembly session in response to a query by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous.

Minister Mohapatra stated that the initiative aims to cater to the growing number of pet owners in the state, providing a respectful and environmentally friendly method for disposing of deceased pets. He mentioned that while the idea had not been considered previously, it is now being seen as praiseworthy and beneficial.

In addressing potential environmental and public health benefits, Mohapatra assured that steps would be taken in consultation with stakeholders and experts. This approach is expected to reduce illegal burial practices and promote responsible pet ownership in the community.
