India's Path to Net Zero: Challenges and Commitments

NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam reiterated India's dedication to climate-friendly growth while admitting the significant role fossil fuels play in the country's current economic framework.
Speaking at an event, Subrahmanyam stressed that markets alone cannot address climate change and outlined NITI Aayog's collaborative efforts with states to create a green energy transition roadmap, set to be released in November.
He further noted that India is on track to meet its national climate targets under the 2015 Paris Agreement, aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity by 2030.
Subrahmanyam highlighted the country's potential to lead in green technology and the necessity of enhanced climate finance, despite India's below-average per capita energy consumption.
