The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to file a fresh report detailing the generation and treatment of electronic waste (e-waste) by various states and Union territories.

Additionally, the NGT has asked CPCB to specify the measures it would take against states and Union territories that fail to comply with the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. This directive came in response to a plea highlighting non-compliance with the tribunal's previous directives for scientific enforcement of these rules.

According to the recent order by a bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, CPCB had submitted a report on August 30 regarding actions taken by states and Union territories. However, the tribunal found the report lacking in details about non-compliance actions and achievement targets for the year 2023-2024. The CPCB has been given six weeks to file an updated report, with the next hearing scheduled for December 12.
