The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is stepping up its efforts to improve meteorological services with a focus on accurate weather forecasting and early warnings for the population. Supported by the Ecole Africaine de la Météorologie et de l'Aviation Civile (EAMAC), CREWS DRC, and CREWS Central Africa, the country has completed a capacity-building course designed to enhance its meteorological capabilities.
The course, held from 19 August to 6 September 2024 in Kinshasa, aimed at improving the expertise of lecturers from the Institut Supérieur des Techniques Appliquées (ISTA) and forecasters from the Agence nationale de météorologie et de télédétection par satellite (METTELSAT). A total of 28 forecasters and 5 lecturers participated in the training, which focused on operational and pedagogical skills in meteorology.
The training covered advanced topics such as synoptic weather analysis and the use of global meteorological data to create accurate weather forecasting bulletins. This knowledge is essential to strengthening the operational capabilities of METTELSAT and improving weather services for the country.
Led by Kone Diakaria of EAMAC and Paul Bugeac from the WMO Education and Training Programme (ETRP), the initiative has paved the way for a long-term collaboration aimed at further strengthening the DRC’s meteorological services. The plan includes expanding ISTA's role in providing fundamental meteorological education and integrating practical internships with METTELSAT to develop the next generation of meteorologists.
This initiative marks a significant step in the DRC’s commitment to improving weather forecasting and enhancing preparedness for natural events, with the goal of safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
