Colombia Faces Grim Record as Deadliest Nation for Environmental Activists in 2023
Colombia was the deadliest country for environmentalists and land rights defenders in 2023, with 79 activists murdered, according to Global Witness. This marks the highest number of such killings ever recorded in a single country by the advocacy group. Despite government promises, the situation highlights significant challenges in protecting environmental activists.
Colombia has emerged as the deadliest country for environmentalists and land rights defenders in 2023, registering a grim record of 79 activists killed, according to UK-based advocacy group Global Witness.
The figure, the highest ever recorded by Global Witness for a single country in any given year, underscores the severe risks faced by environmental defenders. "The figure is really chilling," said Laura Furones, a senior adviser at Global Witness. She added that the report's findings are conservative and likely incomplete.
Latin America accounted for 85% of the global toll of 196 murdered activists, with Colombia leading. The findings starkly contrast with President Gustavo Petro's government promises to pursue environmental justice. Despite some governmental efforts, peace processes with armed groups implicated in activist killings have faltered.
